What is Osteopathy?

Doctors of Osteopathy (D.O.) are physicians whose education includes holistic assessment and hands-on treatment of the body in addition to routine medical training. Not all D.O.s are using these techniques in practice, but we were all taught them. In addition, Osteopathic doctors approach their patients with the knowledge that the body, mind, and spirit are interconnected and the function and structure of our bodies can impact our health.

Osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) is the hands-on treatment that uses the bodies own healing forces to effect change. There is a variety of techniques, from more assertive to extremely gentle. Dr Rodrigues customizes every treatment plan to the unique needs of her patients. A core tenet of this work is that your body wants to get better, and the treatment helps it along. Dr Rodrigues likes to say her goal is to put herself out of a job!

  • For the most part, no. While there are some overlapping techniques, osteopathy is practiced by a licensed medical doctor employing a wide range of techniques and their knowledge of anatomy (structure) and physiology (function), many of which are very gentle.

  • Yes! In fact, OMM and PT work hand in hand to speed up recovery.
